Mill closure hurts Maine’s biofuel efforts

August 18, 2014, Old Town, Maine – The shutdown of Old Mill
Fuel and Fiber is hurting regional efforts at expanding biofuel opportunities
in the paper industry.

According to a report from the Maine Sunday Telegram, the
mill was the only one of its kind in Maine that was experimenting with
commercial-scale biofuel.

Old Town’s had been running a pilot project for producing
butanol from the cellulose in wood fiber prior to its shutdown. The biofuel
production project was seen as an opportunity to product diversification for
pulp and paper mills across the state and throughout the region.

The idling of the mill, owned by Patriarch Partners of New
York, has put 180 people out of work.
