York Region cancels garbage pellet fuel contract

November 10, 2014, Vaughn, Ont. – A garbage-to-pellet fuel
project partnership between York Region and Dongara Developments has been
terminated.

According to a report from yorkregion.com, Dongara
originally approached community officials in August in an attempt to have the
contract torn up.

The garbage fuel pellets, which consisted of municipal waste
shredded and pelletized to be burned as fuel, were not able to be sold in
Ontario. According to current government regulations, the pellets were
classified as waste rather than fuel.

Now that the contract with Dongara has been terminated, the
municipal waste is being sent to landfills, as well as being collected for
waste-to-energy projects in New York like Covanta Energy. Covanta also operates
the Durham-York Energy Centre. The company plans to take waste directly from
York in the near future.
