As a means of reducing the carbon footprint in asphalt roads, greener options have been explored in recent years. Lignin, a natural byproduct from pulp and paper, is being recognized as a potential replacement for bitumen in asphalt mixing. Lignin is known as a “natural wood glue,” and is believed to be able to serve the same purpose in asphalt production.
