Toronto Zoo animals’ manure helping to produce power at new biogas plant

Manure from animals housed at the Toronto Zoo is being converted into power and liquid fertilizer. A new biogas plant is up and running next to the zoo, taking the manure and grocery store waste to produce power.

The plant has reached its 500-kilowatt capacity which can sufficiently power 500 homes. Located in Scarborough, the plant is a first in Canada.

Instead of being directed to a landfill, the plant can take about 2,000 tonnes of zoo animal manure and 15,000 tonnes of organic grocery store waste each year for conversion into useful products.

The concept is the brainchild of a community cooperative called ZooShare.
