Uncertain future for Ontario biomass plant pending government review

Residents in Hearst, Ont., are becoming concerned about the future of the nearby Calstock Biomass Generation plant, owned by Atlantic Power Corporation. The plant generates electricity using wood waste provided by five sawmills in the area.
According to the Timmins Daily Press, the Ontario government is completing a review of existing electric generation facilities, the results of which are expected at the end of the month.
Calstock Biomass Generation’s contract with the provincial government is set to expire in June. But to extend power generation contracts, existing suppliers would have to re-apply and go through an open bidding process.
As a result, many people in Hearst are concerned the plant will close, resulting in the loss of dozens of jobs, the Timmins Daily Press reports.
