University study shows cactus pear could become important new biofuel source

Researchers from the University of Nevada at Reno believe the cactus pear could become a prized biofuel source with its high heat tolerance and low water use.

Climate change modeling suggests long-term drought events will become longer lasting with higher temperatures and less available water.

A recently published study showed the cactus pear used 80 per cent less water than some traditional crops, including maize and sugar cane that require three to six times more water.
