Around the world, the increased demand for wood pellets is also driving expectations how they are sourced. In this session, two policy and communications experts who follow these trends, will examine how ESG and policies around the world are placing higher demands on the sustainability credentials of pellets, and how the sector is responding.


Giulia Cancian
As Policy Director, Giulia leads the advocacy strategy of Bioenergy Europe, the European business association representing the bioenergy sector. She coordinates the policy department, the delivery of policy reports, and the organization of several working groups.Giulia previously worked in other Brussels-based trade associations covering sustainability and energy-related topics (European Biodiesel Board; Hydro Equipment Association; Eurometaux).

She holds a MA in International Relations, awarded at the University of Rome La Sapienza, and an MSc in European Affairs from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel.


Karen Brandt
Karen Brandt is a results-oriented strategic communications professional who has strengthened reputations for companies, governments, communities and non-profits across North America. She has a passion for sustainability and for the past 25 years has built common positions and partnerships with First Nations, environmental groups, customers and governments. Karen has held a number of senior executive level positions in both the private and public sectors including Mosaic Forest Management, Interfor Corporation, the Sustainable Forestry Initiative, and Forestry Innovation Investment Ltd.
She holds an honours Bachelor of Journalism (minor Political Science) from Carleton University in Ottawa.
