Virginia Tech researchers exploring converting food waste into rechargeable batteries

Researchers at Virginia Tech are exploring how food waste and its biomass can be converted into rechargeable batteries to help resolve their sustainable energy issues.

The United States Department of Agriculture Foundational and Applied Science Program is funding a three-year, $450,000 research project which will continue through April 2023.

The research team has learned that the fibre component in food waste is key to developing advanced carbon materials that can be used as the negative terminal of a battery.
