Drax’s U.K. conversion aid faces EU probe

January 5, 2015 - According to a recent article on Bloomberg Business, the European Union (E.U.) is planning on investigating the U.K.’s plans to support conversion of a coal-powered unit to burn wood pellets at a coal plant in Selby, England.


The E.U. is concerned that the U.K. government aid might overcompensate Drax Group Plc and that the plant’s demand for 2.4 million metric tons of wood pellets a year would distort the pellet market.

If Drax is successful in converting the unit, it will mark the company’s third coal-powered unit to burn wood pellets unit converted to biomass.
