Envergent test-burns liquid biofuel

Technologies’ liquid biofuel produced from biomass has been demonstrated
successfully in industrial burners by Oilon Group, a European burner
manufacturer. Envergent’s RTP technology converts biomass, including forest and
agricultural residues, into a clean-burning, carbon-lean liquid biofuel that
can be burned to generate heat or electricity or further upgraded to other
fuels.

Envergent and Oilon worked on the project
with Honeywell Process Solutions. At an event held at its Lahti, Finland,
facility on September 23, 2011, Oilon demonstrated the liquid biofuel can be
used directly in its specially prepared industrial burners. The demonstration
used the Oilon XH-burner, which is designed for fuels produced from biomass.

Envergent’s RTP technology works by rapidly
heating biomass at ambient pressure to generate high yields of a liquid biofuel
(pyrolysis oil). The resulting fuel can be burned in industrial burners to
produce heat or to power electric generators, or it can be upgraded into
transportation fuels. Honeywell’s UOP received a $25 million award from the
U.S. Department of Energy to build an Integrated Biorefinery in Kapolei,
Hawaii. The facility will demonstrate the technology’s viability, test the
fuels produced, and evaluate the environmental footprint of the process.
Construction of the facility began in August 2011, with initial production scheduled to begin in
2012 followed by full operation by 2014.
