Feds invest over $1.43M to support biomass projects in Yukon

According to a news release, the multi-year investment also helps support biomass projects in Indigenous communities by helping them decide their bioenergy solutions.

The forestry initiative aims to increase Indigenous participation in forestry, enhance the competitiveness of the forest economy, reduce diesel use for heating and energy in northern, remote communities and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

“The Government of Canada funding directly led to capacity development and the advancement of multiple biomass projects that are benefitting local First Nations and promoting economic development within our forestry industry. These biomass projects support the development of locally sourced renewable energy to meet Yukon’s growing energy needs and move the territory toward a sustainable and self-reliant energy supply,” said government of Yukon Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources, Ranj Pillai.

The project is co-funded by Natural Resources Canada’s Indigenous Forestry Initiative and Indigenous Services Canada’s Strategic Partnerships Initiative, both of which aim to create opportunities in forestry for Indigenous communities.
