Spanish biomass plant upgrade operational

June 26, 2012 London, UK - Global paper and packaging company Smurfit Kappa's 21.4MW combined heat and power (CHP) plant at its paper mill in Nervion, Spain, is now operational, the company said.
Biomass consumption at the plant, which previously had a capacity of around 12MW, has now been increased by 40,000 t/yr to more than 100,000 t/yr. The plant is expected to provide 120,000 MWh/yr, up from around 80,000 MWh/yr.
A newly-installed multi-functional crusher is able to process all forest waste, allowing the company to use feedstocks other than the “black liquor” previously used — a by-product from the milling process.
“The new crushing line allows other forest waste to be used such as land cleaning, pruning and thinning, enhancing sustainable forest management and helping to keep the forest clean,” Smurfit Kappa said.
Construction started on the new unit in January last year as part of a €20mn ($25mn) biomass energy generation project to reduce fossil fuel emissions and increase the mill's profitability. The company is now 65pc self-sufficient in energy following the upgrade.
