University of Waterloo’s new aeronautics institute to study sustainable aviation

The University of Waterloo has become Canada’s first institution to research the means to make aviation more sustainable.

Not only is the Waterloo Institute for Sustainable Aeronautics looking at the environmental impact of the aviation industry, it is studying the economics of the industry, including labour shortages, and is looking at the means for attracting more women and people of colour to the industry.

Among the research topics slated for study include improved aerodynamics to improve fuel efficiency, the use of cleaner fuels such as hydrogen and using math to improve flight physiology and route optimization. Among those sitting on the institute’s advisory committee is former Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield.
