EU’s tighter biofuel standards may be good news for Canadian canola producers

Tightened biofuel standards in the European Union could be good news for the Canadian canola industry.

Canada’s exports of canola seed to the EU is on the rise with palm oil and soybean oil falling out of favour as biodiesel feedstock. Canola’s ability to be produced sustainably has given it a leg up over competitive crops.

“For the canola we send to Europe, it’s all certified as sustainable, meaning that our farmers need to meet the requirements of the European Commission that is audited and verified, in conjunction with the grain companies who are servicing that market,” Brian Innes, Canola Council of Canada vice-president of public affairs, told Lethbridge News Now.
