Cooking oil was used to fuel an Air France-KLM Airbus to Montreal from France on Tuesday. A 16 per cent mix of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) was in the fuel tank.

By next year, flights leaving France must use one per cent SAF. The European Union’s goal is to increase the minimum to two per cent by 2025 and five per cent by 2030.

Air France-KLM’s chief executive said airlines have a responsibility to cut emissions. The biofuel used in the Paris-to-Montreal flight was produced at a refinery in southern France.
