Prairie Clean Energy among funded projects to enhance Canada’s mining sector

Saskatchewan bioenergy company Prairie Clean Energy (PCE) is among the project recipients funded by the federal Mining Innovation Commercialization Accelerator Network.
The company is receiving $1,100,000 boost for its $23-million project to use local biomass to reduce the carbon intensity of heat consumption in Saskatchewan’s potash sector up to 80 per cent.
PCE’s biomass processing technology produces solid biofuel from agriculture and forestry residues.
“This technology has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80 per cent when used to displace fossil fuels for industrial process heating,” Mahmood Ebadian, PCE’s chief product and supply chain development officer, said in a company news release.
PCE is partnering with Saskatchewan Polytechnic to provide a living lab demonstration through the implementation of a pilot operation at their Agriculture and Food Production diploma program field site near Moose Jaw, Sask.
“We are excited for this applied research collaboration with Prairie Clean Energy,” Robin Smith, director of Saskatchewan Polytechnic’s Sustainability-Led Integrated Centres of Excellence (SLICE), said. “This project aligns perfectly with SLICE’s focus on the circular economy. With this project, agricultural waste in the form of flax straw will be used to generate energy and support the potash industry in lowering greenhouse gas emissions.”
