Dec. 1, 2011, Tilbury, ENG – Within the next two weeks, RWE npower’s
Tilbury coal plant will be transformed into a biomass power plant with
an output of 750 megawatts.

According to an article in Biomass Power and Thermal, the plant will be one of the largest in the world, consuming approximately 2.3 million metric tons of wood pellets between now and mid-2013. The plant is responding to a piece of legislation from 2008, that ordered coal plant to purchase enhancements, or only operate for 20,000 more hours. RWE's Tilbury plant is reaching the end of those hours, but will spend the last year and a half burning solely biomass.

In mid-2013, when the hours expire, RWE npower will have the option of continuing its operation, based on its success.
