March 2, 2016 – Forest biomass has won an important victory in the U.S., as it has been recognized as a carbon-neutral substance.
According to forestindustry.com, three senators received unanimous consent for a senate amendment on the carbon benefits of biomass. Susan Collins, a Republican Senator from Maine, penned the amendment.
The amendment requires federal agencies to recognize forest biomass as a carbon-neutral energy source. Since President Obama’s Clean Power Plan will mean that states will have to comply with federal regulations, the addition of the amendment means that every state will have to recognize forest biomass as carbon-neutral.
