Williams Lake biomass facility faces appeals

Dec. 19, 2016 - Atlantic Power Corporation’s bid to burn rail ties at its biomass-fired generating facility in Williams Lake, B.C., is facing 13 submitted appeals.

The appeals target the company’s air emissions and ash landfill permits. A group formed in opposition of the company’s request to burn rail ties says the dioxins and furans from the ash could reach hazardous levels in landfills.

The province approved the company’s request to burn up to 50 per cent rail ties in September.
