B.C. waste wood could play key role in Drax’s plan to be carbon negative by 2030

The Drax Group plans to become the first big European power company to combine biomass power with carbon capture and storage in its quest to be carbon negative by 2030.
A University of British Columbia wood science professor says the province’s recent wildfires presses the need for dead wood and debris to be removed from forests, to where it could potentially be converted into wood pellets. Drax recently acquired Pinnacle Renewable Energy Inc., the province’s largest wood pellet producer.
Simon Fraser University energy economist Mark Jaccard applauds Drax’s plan, adding he hopes to see coal-powered plants in Alberta and Saskatchewan converted as Drax has done in Europe.
